There are a lot of wonderful role models for 40+ women on TV. And then there’s Janice Dickinson.
I had the misfortune of meeting the self-proclaimed “World’s First Supermodel” a few years ago, and thought she was the loudest, rudest, most obnoxious woman I ever met. But I didn’t really hope for something nasty to happen to her until I started watching “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” From the first episode, I was wishing she’d get eaten by a crocodile or swallowed by a boa constrictor, just to put her fellow contestants out of their misery.
Ousted camper Daniel Baldwin called her “undereducated and over-medicated,” adding, “She urinated in the camp rather than walk an extra 25 steps, she stole food and lied about it… It’s almost a sociopath’s behavior.” He was being kind.
As the oldest member of the group, Dickinson could have been a mother figure, provided she had any maternal instinct. Instead, she came across as that crazy old aunt you avoid on holidays, except lazier, mouthier and with more obvious plastic surgery. Fortunately for the rest of the group, she was finally kicked out of the jungle tonight.
Be a hot cougar, be a lovable grandma, be whatever you want to be—just don’t be a pathetic old hag trying desperately to hold on to your youth. And don’t steal PowerBars.

Lately a lot of famous married men seem to be stepping out on their wives—and getting caught. The main reason they get caught is that the women they’re cheating with rat them out to the press. Who know why guys like Tiger Woods, Jesse James and David Boreanaz have steak at home, but insist on going out for dogburgers? But the motives of their consorts are pretty obvious—fame and money. The press insists on referring to these women as “mistresses.”
In days of old, a “mistress” was a woman who was “kept” by a married man, often a wealthy one. The “other woman” respected her man’s wife and family, and in return for being supported in style, she kept her mouth shut. The wife often knew about the mistress, but as long as she had the name, the house and the children, she also stayed quiet. Obviously, the new breed of “mistress” has little in common with her classier forerunners.
There are better terms to describe the strippers, nightclub hostesses, cocktail waitresses and porn stars who’ve mined their indiscretions for big bucks payoffs—like hooker, whore, skank and slut. I wish the media would stop honoring these calculating bimbos with the term “mistress” and call them what they really are.
