Save Your Sanity: Save Your Energy!
-
As I was cruising through my neighborhood on Sunday, (okay, okay, I was frenetically running errands like a fiend) I caught the tail end of a great interview on NPR about faith in these woeful financial times. The interviewee made a great statement about learning to look at our savings in a different way. She said the money is “just stored energy.” Stored energy! I love that. We obsess and stress over our nest of energy we’ve accumulated in order to barter our energy with someone else’s.I think the greatest thing about the Storage of Energy approach is that it makes you simplify how money controls your life. AND, it underlines the need to take care of yourself, because otherwise you’ll have no more energy to save. I, for one, have been a mad lady the last month, and now my reserves of energy are KAPUT. This girl’s a hot mess.
So, today, let’s go through 3 of my new favorite ways to treat your Energy Reserves right! And save some of those pennies for days when…well, your storage unit of vitality is feeling a little slack!
1. THE 11 BEST FOODS YOU AREN’T EATING: A fantastic article from everybody’s favorite news source, The New York Times. I’ve been saving on to this sweetie of an article for months waiting to share it. I love when my dietary choices are validated by experts (I am a cinnamon freak. I put it on everything. Try steaming a sweet potato, adding just a little butter or Smart Balance, and adding cinnamon. Amaaaazing.) buuuut I hate when expert-y people remind me I should be eating beets. I HATE beets. (Psssst! Check out Michael Pollan Wants Your Food Rules to share your own little diet foibles! Hilarious!)
2. PaperBack Swap: One of the essentials of anything is knowing when to work and when to rest. PaperBack Swap spells it out nice and clear that resting should not be costly. You don’t have to sell your firstborn in exchange for a good book at Barnes & Noble. You don’t have to trade your eggs to afford a good DVD on Amazon. Nope. Just exchange at PaperBack Swap. You mail a book, you get a book. You can swap, keep, or share. FREE. There seems to be something karmically good about sharing with book-lovers around the globe anyway…Like a worldwide public library…
3. ENERGY STAR: If we’re being literal. All the millions of ways to save energy and SAVE MONEY in your home…Oop! Do you hear that? Shhh! Listen! Oh, yeah, it’s the sound of your pennies adding up to a vacation in Costa Rica. Niiice.
4. ALL YOU: I love magazines that are all about moi. And All You suggests Daily Savings for you! Oh, God, ladies, save your time, save your money, save your ENERGY and go visit All You. : )
