“Ugly Betty” has been one of my favorite shows ever since it made its debut, and one of the best reasons to watch the show is Vanessa Williams as the deliciously evil Wilhelmina Slater. Wili’s devious plans to take over Meade Publications and Mode magazine keep the plots eternally interesting as audiences wonder what she’ll do next.
But I’ve been a fan of Vanessa’s long before she stepped into Wili’s Jimmy Choos. I was elated when she won the Miss American pageant back in the 80s, what a relief to see an outspoken Miss A with style and flair instead of another bouffant airhead who talks about world peace but never bothered to get a passport. Alas, Vanessa’s effect on the legacy of Miss America was short-lived as her crown was snatched when Penthouse unearthed “scandalous” nude shots taken before she had any plans to enter the pageant.
Vanessa bounced back after the Miss A debacle by proceeding full speed ahead into a career as an actress and recording artist, ultimately becoming the most successful former winner of all time. Her memorable roles included an over-the-top pop singer in “A Diva’s Christmas Carol.” I’m totally hooked on this BET TV movie from the 90s and have to watch it every year. I have to wonder how much this role had to do with her being cast as the diva Wili?
Vanessa’s Cougar Cred is boosted by her two marriages—one to sexy PR exec Ramon Hervey, the other to devilishly handsome (and younger!) L.A. Laker Rick Fox. She’s currently single but I can’t help thinking there’s some Cougar Candy in her future!

Lately a lot of famous married men seem to be stepping out on their wives—and getting caught. The main reason they get caught is that the women they’re cheating with rat them out to the press. Who know why guys like Tiger Woods, Jesse James and David Boreanaz have steak at home, but insist on going out for dogburgers? But the motives of their consorts are pretty obvious—fame and money. The press insists on referring to these women as “mistresses.”
In days of old, a “mistress” was a woman who was “kept” by a married man, often a wealthy one. The “other woman” respected her man’s wife and family, and in return for being supported in style, she kept her mouth shut. The wife often knew about the mistress, but as long as she had the name, the house and the children, she also stayed quiet. Obviously, the new breed of “mistress” has little in common with her classier forerunners.
There are better terms to describe the strippers, nightclub hostesses, cocktail waitresses and porn stars who’ve mined their indiscretions for big bucks payoffs—like hooker, whore, skank and slut. I wish the media would stop honoring these calculating bimbos with the term “mistress” and call them what they really are.
